February: Taking care of our heart

Our heart works every moment of the day to supply oxygen and blood flow to our vital organs.

February is American Heart Month, and it’s the perfect time give our heart the attention it deserves. When it comes to reducing the risk of stroke and heart disease, intentional care is our first line of defense — and the kitchen is a great place to start.

One of the higher risk factors for heart disease is the consumption of saturated fats. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025-2030 recommend a maximum of 10% of total daily calories from saturated fats, and the American Heart Association suggests an even more restrictive 6%. 1 gram of fat has 9 kcal, therefore in a 2000 kcal diet, that would be between 13-22g of saturated fat per day. Conversely, unsaturated fats are known to be protective.

This month, I invite you to promote the consumption of whole foods low in saturated fats and high in unsaturated fats like seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, hemp, flax, chia), almonds, avocados, walnuts or virgin olive oil.
